Men…..Has this happened to you yet? In one study 52% of males between the ages of 40-70 have suffered some form of erectile dysfunction (ED). This can cause of significant distress for any male but also has an impact on relationships and self-esteem. What causes this? Most feel that this is a vascular issue. Meaning this can be caused by high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and smoking. These conditions cause damage to the arteries supplying the penis. There is destruction of endothelial cells which affect the release of nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide is needed for an erection. While medications such as Viagra and Cialis can help with this, they will inevitably stop working or not work at all if the above conditions are not under control. Traditionally, outside of the current medications on the market, penis pumps, penile implants, and trimix injections are used with varying success. Newer treatments such as the Priapism shot (P Shot), shockwave therapy, and peptides have shown significant promise. I will talk about more about these treatments in the next blog.
